When I bought my PS3 there were 2 games I brought home: Devil May Cry 4 and Resistance: Fall of Man. I was totally surprised to find out that Resistance: FOM was a good game. In fact it was great game. Although I did play it after I had played COD4 and well you just have to look past the graphics. I found it to be a really good shooter and was extremely fun. Not only was it fun it had a very good story and I was totally engaged.
Ever since they announced the sequel I have been so psyched to play it. And now that I have played it I can say I am VERY disappointed in the outcome(single player).
Single Player:
This part of the game is by far the weakest. For example the story. I have been looking forward to the sequel and thinking that they are going to expand on the 1st because I really enjoyed the first game. However playing through the game I had no idea what the hell was going on. It almost seemed like they went to make the scale of the game so large that they forgot the story. In the first game you always know Hale’s motivation in killing these guys. In this one he has no motivation. This game does a bad job of explaining why am I killing this guy and what I am fighting for. I mean this may have had the most retarded ending I have ever seen. I won’t spoil it for you but its so stupid that It doesn’t make sense. You are just left going um WTF. They left the ending as is so they can keep it open for another. But I am sorry Insomniac Resistance 3 will not get my preorder.
In addition there are some problems with the gameplay as well. The way this game is played is as if you learn from your mistakes. Meaning you learn by dieing. As soon you enter an area you just get bombarded with shots it just becomes so stupid because all you are doing is dieing. In addition this has the same issue that Battlefield: Bad Company had which was when you enter and area the enemies will immediately see you and start shooting you. It gets even worse when you have a squad with you. In many encounters you generally have a squad around you. The AI enemies will completely ignore them and only shoot you. For example when the enemy AI rush at you they would literally run by the whole squad in front of me and bum rush me and kill me. Im sitting there going WTF what about those 5 other guys you just ran past. And my squad buddies only seem to respond when I have already died. There is also a specific part the frustrated the hell out of me is when I had to fight 3 titans in one go. You could just imagine how much fun that was.
The only think that is good about this game are the weapons and the visuals. The weapons are very unique and are very fun to use. And some of visual are quite excellent especially some of the giant bosses. However the huge boss fights, and you probably know If you’ve seen the trailer, are extremely guided. More to the point it is entirely on rails and goes the same for all the giant bosses which is kind of disappointing because you don’t have that sense that you are actually fighting these things or it knows your presence. Very scripted boss battles.
All together this was a very mediocre experience. I mean seriously this game needs to go take a 101 class on FPS.
Multiplayer:
A side from the single player which was an abomination of first person shooters, the multiplayer is very good. It almost seems the multiplayer can be a game all by itself, it’s that good. The best part is 8 player coup. This is the most unique mode I have every played in a FPS genre. To explain it better think of it like an instance party or a raid for an MMO. You have 3 classes you chose from: Heavy, Spec Ops, and Medic. As you may think Heavies are tank of the party, Spec Ops are the DPS, and the Medics are the healers. And just like an MMO you have your heavies up front doing the tanking and shelling out massive damage, you have the spec ops in the middle feeding ammo and using long range rifles for dps, and medics in the back healing. When you have an effective party going it becomes extremely fun as the game will send massive waves of enemies at you. And just like an MMO at the end of the instance there is usually boss that may take forever to take down.
Along with the coup is you regular deathmatch and objective type games which are fun as well. Just like in COD4 you can choose specific perks to better improve you chances in battle. And the 60 player matches totally work. Now I do not mean team deathmatch with 60 players because that is the most chaotic game you can ever play. It is the 60 player objective which is fun. The way it works is each team has squads of five. When you enter a game you are put into a squad and each squad has their on objective they have to fulfill. On the opposing team you have your rival squad which is trying to counteract what your squad is doing. In doing this it makes it less chaotic and extremely fun, where you have squads against squads fighting for a specific objective.
Final Thoughts:
All Together Resistance 2 is an OK package. The single player being very disappointing, almost to the point that I wanted to trade in the game and I have never traded a game in before. However the The multiplayer totally makes up for the mediocre single player. If you have a PS3 and you want a great FPS multiplayer I highly recommend you purchase this game. However If you just wanted to play through single player I recommend just renting this one.
